Wine, Travel and Trade Under Venetian Rule

By Thomas Karvounis

Wine was at the heart of Venetian strategy in the Aegean. As Venice expanded its maritime empire, the islands became essential producers and distributors of high-value goods, and wine quickly rose to the top of that list.

Under Venetian influence, local vineyards expanded, increasingly organized to support large-scale trade.Viticultural practices improved, incorporating techniques Venice adopted from its vast trading network. Wine became a commercial bridge connecting the islands to markets across the Mediterranean and Europe.

Travel routes strengthened, with merchant ships transporting not only wine but also culture, ideas, and customs. The islands became docking stations for fleets traveling between Crete, Cyprus, the Peloponnese, and Venice itself. As a result, wines from Greek vineyards began appearing in markets far beyond their local shores, while the islanders absorbed influences from foreign sailors, merchants, and settlers.

This exchange shaped both the economic life of the islands and their cultural identity. In many ways, the heritage of the Karvounis family mirrors that legacy: rooted locally, yet shaped by centuries of outward connection, travel, and interaction.
