What makes Drops of God unique is how wine is described

By Thomas Karvounis

Drops of God is a Japanese wine manga created by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto that blends storytelling, wine education, and emotion.

At its core, it’s about inheritance and rivalry: when a legendary wine critic dies, his vast cellar is left to the person who can correctly identify a series of extraordinary wines through blind tastings. His estranged son must compete against his adopted protégé, a brilliant young sommelier, in a battle of palate, memory, and intuition.

What makes Drops of God unique is how wine is described. Instead of technical jargon, wines are portrayed through metaphors, memories, places, and feelings — a sip can evoke a childhood, a stormy sea, or a lost love. Real wines, real estates, and real regions are central to the story, and many bottles featured in the series became famous overnight in the real world.

More than a manga, Drops of God reshaped how a generation discovered wine, making it accessible, emotional, and deeply human. It’s storytelling that teaches you how to feel wine, not just taste it.

What began as a cult manga became a global wine phenomenon featuring real wines and real estates that later saw massive recognition in the real world. Its impact was so strong that the story was adapted into an internationally acclaimed Apple TV+ series, bringing the world of wine, legacy, and passion to the screen for a new generation of wine lovers.
